The Spectacled Bear is the only bear species native to South America, endemic to the Andean mountain ranges. It is characterized by distinctive white or cream-colored markings around its eyes, resembling spectacles, which gives the species its unique name.

Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Tropical and subtropical Andean mountain forests at elevations between 250-4,300 meters, ranging through Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. Primarily inhabits cloud forests and humid montane ecosystems.

Ecological Role

Critical seed disperser in Andean ecosystems, playing a significant role in forest regeneration and maintaining biodiversity. Acts as an umbrella species for conservation of mountain forest habitats.

Morphology

  • SKIN COAT Dense, black to dark brown fur with unique white/cream facial markings. Fur provides insulation in high-altitude environments.
  • LIMBS WINGS Powerful limbs with strong, curved claws adapted for climbing and foraging. Plantigrade locomotion with five-toed feet.
  • HEAD SENSORY Rounded head with distinctive facial markings. Excellent sense of smell and hearing. Small, rounded ears.
  • BODY STRUCTURE Medium-sized bear, typically 1.3-1.9 meters in length, weighing 80-125 kg. Compact, robust build adapted to mountainous terrain.
