Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Subtropical mountainous rainforests of Taiwan, typically found at elevations between 500-1500 meters, inhabiting dense vegetation and tree canopies with high humidity and moderate temperatures.

Ecological Role

Critical role in forest ecosystem as insectivore, controlling arthropod populations and serving as prey for larger predators. Bioindicator species reflecting forest ecosystem health and environmental changes.

Morphology

  • SKIN COAT Smooth, moist skin with green to brown coloration providing camouflage, capable of subtle color variations for thermoregulation and predator evasion
  • LIMBS WINGS Extensively webbed hindlimbs with skin membrane (patagium) extending between limbs, enabling controlled aerial gliding distances up to 10-15 meters
  • HEAD SENSORY Large, protruding eyes with excellent peripheral vision, wide mouth adapted for capturing insects, well-developed tympanic membrane for acoustic perception
  • BODY STRUCTURE Small-sized amphibian, approximately 45-65 mm in body length, lightweight with specialized webbed membranes between digits enabling gliding
