Habitat

Tropical and subtropical shallow coastal waters across the Indo-Pacific region, including areas around Australia, Southeast Asia, and East Africa. Prefers seagrass meadows in depths ranging from 1-10 meters.

Morphology

  • SKIN COAT Thick, smooth grayish-brown skin with sparse hair, providing thermal regulation and protection.

  • HEAD SENSORY Rounded snout with sensitive bristles, small eyes, and excellent underwater sensory capabilities. Lacks external ear pinnae.
  • BODY STRUCTURE Robust, streamlined marine mammal measuring 2.5-3 meters in length, weighing 230-500 kg. Fusiform body adapted for marine locomotion with horizontal tail fluke.
