Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Deep marine environments of the southern California coastline, typically found at depths between 100-300 meters in rocky or hard substrate zones with low light conditions.

Ecological Role

Provides critical habitat and shelter for marine invertebrates and small fish species, contributes to marine biodiversity, and serves as a bioindicator of deep-sea ecosystem health.

Morphology

  • SKIN COAT Protective outer layer of soft tissue covering the hard skeletal structure
  • LIMBS WINGS Complex, hierarchical branching pattern resembling a Christmas tree
  • HEAD SENSORY Polyps located at branch tips, capable of limited movement and environmental sensing
  • BODY STRUCTURE Branching, tree-like skeletal structure with multiple lateral branches, dark black or deep brown coloration, rigid calcified axis
